Gabriela McNulty – HSEQ Advisor
What your role is and how did you get here?
I’m a HSEQ (Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality) Advisor for Fibrus. My interest in HSEQ was sparked by my degree in Psychology and I progressed to become a Chartered Member of IOSH. After successfully completing my Masters Degree in Health, Safety & Risk Management I began working in the Oil & Gas industry offshore in the North Sea. My team was made up of only 3% women.
What do you love about the industry?
I have been with Fibrus for over a year now and I love the variety of work within the telecoms industry.
There are two sides to the industry: there's everything that we can see from broadband to mobile devices & apps etc. and in addition to this there's the infrastructure "behind-the-scenes" side that makes all of this a reality.
Part of my role is ensuring that people involved in these processes can go home safely at the end of each day. My job as a HSEQ Advisor is never boring. In our industry there is so much change happening at a very fast pace, and it's great to be part of that wave.
What is it like working in a male dominated environment and what advice you would give women considering stepping outside the ‘norm’?
I genuinely feel there are no barriers or restrictions for women progressing in the telecoms industry. I have never felt at a disadvantage during my time at Fibrus, because of the positive focus on inclusion. To me, working in a male-dominated field is about striking a good balance of being confident, but not bossy; polite, but not overly deferential.
Why should they consider Fibrus?
To me, one of the best things about Fibrus is the flexible working. I thought it would be challenging to work full time whilst having a young family, however Fibrus' flexible working arrangement has allowed me to work full-time and most importantly enjoy and spend time with my family.
